We're counting down the months until flash kicks the bucket. With the power of jQuery already pounding nails in its coffin, the implementation of HTML5 & CSS3 will bring it that much closer to the end.
Flash has had its moment to shine, but I think that brief flicker is history. The technology arose to speed up the web, yet it's rarely been used to do anything other than slow it down and pollute it with unnecessary distractions.
Flash is a great tool for animation, and its last legion of supporters will no doubt continue to craft gob-smacking feature length websites, but with the advent of HTML5 and it's natural marriage with CSS3, Flash's days are numbered. |
HTML5 will mean embedded videos right in web pages becomes reality. Combine it with CSS3 and you've got the technology to deliver an enhanced, streamlined experience to all users without the need for plugins.
Apple's touching epitaph was to recently, formally bar Flash from its iPhone and iPad devices - a devastating blow. I'll happily step out on a limb and say that within 2 years, Flash will no longer be a necessary feather in the cap of a skilled graphic/web designer.
